The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) has launched its latest training course, Building Automation Systems for Existing Federal Facilities for no-cost, on-demand access.  

In this course, FEMP Technical Lead Brad Gustafson offers instruction on setting specific performance goals for the BAS, designing the BAS to meet the established performance goals, and developing Requests for Proposals for both BAS design and installation. Participants will also learn about:

  • Federal and industry standards and guidance related to BAS;
  • Applying GSA Smart Building Standards for open, converged, and normalized building automation;
  • Integrating existing systems through open communication protocols;
  • Making decisions on critical BAS functionality as it applies to: efficiency/cost cutting, indoor environmental quality, operations and maintenance, and safety and security;
  • Developing a design plan including sequences of operations, control strategies, schematics, and points lists;
  • Considering financing mechanisms for the BAS; and
  • Maximizing the installed BAS to improve overall efficiency.  

This 3-hour course is free to take. It is available on-demand on the Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG).

FEMP training courses are no cost training opportunities to help federal energy, environmental, and fleet professionals plan and execute projects to help meet federal goals and requirements. Participants are eligible for continuing education units (CEUs) upon successful completion of FEMP training courses.
