Background Information
On January 15, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced up to $100 million in federal funding for large-scale conversion of carbon emissions captured from industrial operations and power plants into environmentally responsible and economically valuable products. Provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the funding will advance the pilot scale testing of carbon conversion technologies with high technology readiness levels (TRLs) capable of achieving significant carbon mitigation via biological, catalytic, or mineralization pathways.
DOE also seeks to advance and support testing of product performance and characterization needed for market or consumer adoption. This may include lifecycle analysis development for novel carbon conversion technologies and lifecycle analysis development for pilot or demonstration facilities using those technologies.
Areas of Interest
This NOFO will invest appropriations for R&D of carbon conversion technologies in four topic areas:
- Pilot Scale Biological Conversion: (1a) Algae production, separation and conversion technologies and (1b) Non-photosynthetic biological CO2 conversion technologies
- Pilot Scale Catalytic Conversion: (2a) Thermochemical conversion technologies and (2b) Electrochemical conversion technologies
- Pilot Scale Mineralization: (3a) Synthetic Aggregates; (3b) Alternative Binders; and (3c) Injection, Curing, and Carbonation
- Other Testing and LCA Development Required for Commercialization: (4a) Performance testing and Performance Validation and (4b) Technical Support for carbon utilization LCA development
