Critical minerals and materials are a crucial part of sustainable economic and technological development, and their increasing demand will persist for years to come. In May 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published the Critical Minerals Assessment, a guide to 18 materials deemed necessary to meet the continuing and increasing demand from technology and energy supply chains. With the understanding that these materials are critical, DOE and the Minerals Sustainability program support strategic tools to benefit critical minerals and materials research, development, demonstration, and deployment and the broader critical materials and minerals ecosystem of industry, academia, operators, federal, state and local governments, Tribal Nations, and non-governmental organizations.

The Critical Minerals and Materials Matchmaker (CM3) is an online information resource created to help connect users across the critical minerals and materials supply chain. CM3 includes a survey designed for organizations to self-identify their critical minerals and materials-aligned activities and interests, and an interactive map that displays those on-going activities in a dynamic way.

Purpose of CM3

  • Offer a platform to accelerate the availability of digital infrastructure and resources to the critical minerals and materials community.
  • Connect organizations and individuals involved in research, development, demonstration, and deployment and in activities related to critical minerals resource permitting, production, supply chains, and environmental and community impacts and benefits.
  • Highlight current and prospective critical mineral and material efforts in an interactive geospatial map.

Critical Minerals and Materials Matchmaker Self-Identification Survey

To include your critical minerals management activity or activities in Critical Minerals and Materials Matchmaker, please fill out the Critical Minerals and Materials Survey

If your organization has many ongoing or planned activities that would be onerous to enter in the form, or if your activities are difficult to geolocate (such as a transport network), please email the team at [email protected].

This initiative is aligned with the approach of DOE’s H2 Matchmaker and Carbon Matchmaker. Read more information on H2 Matchmaker and Carbon Matchmaker.
