Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Attended 2019 Africa Oil Week

In November, DOE’s Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy (ASFE) Steven Winberg spoke at Africa Oil Week, the leading business intelligence and transaction platform for the African oil and gas sector.

Throughout the week-long event, ASFE Winberg discussed U.S. energy policy and detailed how DOE plans to support Africa in advancing economic prosperity and energy development across the continent. He also outlined a vision for deeper U.S. commitment to Africa in the oil, natural gas, and power sectors. Read more.

National Energy Technology Laboratory Honored with Three R&D 100 Awards

FE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory received three R&D 100 Awards. Issued by R&D World Magazine, these awards recognize the most technologically significant processes and products introduced to the marketplace in the past year. Read more about these three awards, highlighted below:

• Cobalt-Based Nanocrystalline Alloys for Gapless Inductor and Sensor Applications (Mechanical and Materials category);
• Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Subsurface Monitoring Tool (Analytical and Test category);
• Offshore Risk Modeling Suite (Software and Services category).

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program

Every year, FE selects undergraduate and graduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math to participate in the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) program. While the 2020 application period is now closed, FE looks forward to welcoming another great class of MLEF fellows this upcoming summer. Stayed tuned for more details!

2019 Year in Review

Under the leadership of ASFE Steven Winberg, FE is working to advance the President’s all-of-the-above strategy to maximize the use of the Nation’s energy resources. Check out FE’s Year in Review; highlights included:

• Increased liquefied natural gas export approval and industry activity;
• Developed oil and natural gas field laboratories;
• Launched the Coal FIRST (Flexible, Innovative, Resilient, Small, and Transformative) initiative;   
• Accelerated research and development on direct air capture of carbon dioxide;
• Advanced coal as a low-cost change agent for the development of valuable products.

News Highlights

2019 Grid Modernization Lab Call

FE announced approximately $8 million in federal funding for three projects through DOE’s 2019 Grid Modernization Lab Call. These projects are part of a larger Department-wide funding announcement totaling approximately $80 million. The projects aim to strengthen, transform, and improve the resilience of energy infrastructure to ensure the Nation’s access to reliable and secure sources of energy now and in the future. • October 28, 2019 – DOE awards strategic petroleum reserve lease to ExxonMobil.
• November 1, 2019 – DOE announced $4 million for projects to collaborate internationally to accelerate carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies.
• November 6, 2019 – FE announced $8 million for projects under DOE’s 2019 Grid Modernization Lab Call.
