EM<\/a>\u2019s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant<\/a> (WIPP) reached a major milestone in April, 2024 \u2014 25 years of operations at the nation\u2019s only deep, underground geological repository for disposal of defense-generated transuranic nuclear waste. Following a 25th anniversary ceremony, attendees gathered for a photograph next to a Waste Isolation Pilot Plant truck and empty, new transportation containers used to transport transuranic waste to the facility.<\/p>\n\n

During calendar year 2023, the team at EM<\/a>\u2019s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant<\/a> (WIPP) had its best shipment performance in 10 years, continuing the cleanup of sites in New Mexico and across the country.<\/p>\n\n

In 2023, WIPP received 489 waste shipments from generator sites throughout the country, compared to 272 shipments in 2022. The end of 2023 marked the first time in a decade that crews started mining a new disposal panel at the nation\u2019s only deep geologic waste repository for defense-related transuranic waste.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe successful start to mining Panel 11 was a great demonstration of how open dialogue and communication with our regulators and stakeholders, along with the support of the field office team, can help mission success,\u201d said Michael Gerle, environmental regulatory compliance director for EM\u2019s Carlsbad Field Office. <\/p>\n\n
