EM and its liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site<\/a> completed canister storage modifications in one of two glass waste storage buildings, effectively doubling that facility\u2019s waste storage capacity and saving more than $100 million by deferring the expense of constructing another storage building.<\/p>\n\n

EM authorized the newest mega-size disposal unit to begin operating at the Savannah River Site<\/a>, completing a 2024 priority for the cleanup program.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

The authorization marks the last step before the Saltstone Disposal Unit can begin to receive decontaminated material for disposal. <\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

The unit was completed over $60 million under budget and seven months ahead of schedule. SDU 9 is the fourth mega-size unit built at SRS and can hold up to 33 million gallons of saltstone. Read the full story here<\/a>.

EM received concurrence from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on May 23, 2024 to suspend waste removal activities in Tank 10 at the Savannah River Site and move to the next step in the closure process, accomplishing a Federal Facility Agreement (FAA) milestone.<\/p>\n\n
