The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) has achieved a significant milestone by completing construction of the Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System (SSCVS) facility — a new, state-of-the-art, large-scale ventilation system at its Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) and contractor Isotek achieved a 2024 priority for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) while also crossing another major milestone in the highest priority cleanup project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

In the half century since the inception of the Waste Management Symposia, many EM sites have come full circle, cleaned and transformed into wildlife refuges, wetland preserves and national parks, U.S. Deputy Energy Secretary David Turk remarked in a prerecorded video message to the audience at the annual conference.
Developing more sustainable ways to perform work is a continuous focus on DOE’s Oak Ridge Reservation. The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) and contractor UCOR made major contributions to help EM reach last year’s goal to bring at least 150 electric vehicles to the cleanup program’s fleet.
