On Oct. 1, 2021, EM completed demolition of the final 18 DOE-owned buildings at the Energy Technology Engineering Center<\/a> (ETEC) site in Ventura County, California. This marked a milestone in the ongoing cleanup of the site where nuclear energy and liquid metals research was conducted from the 1950s to the late 1980s.<\/p>\n\n

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC<\/a>), in cooperation with the Boeing Company, NASA<\/a> and DOE<\/a> EM<\/a>, hosted an educational workshop series called Groundwater U to educate stakeholders about groundwater at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL<\/a>) and prepare community members to review and comment on future groundwater decision documents from the laboratory.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

SSFL is a 2,850-acre former rocket engine testing and energy research facility located in southeastern Ventura County. DOE conducted research and development, including leading-edge nuclear, solar and sodium reactor technology, on a 290-acre portion of the SSFL known as the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC<\/a>) in Area IV.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

EM is charged with cleanup of residual contamination that remains in DOE\u2019s portion of the ETEC site. The cleanup program completed demolition of buildings there in 2022 and is working with DTSC on final groundwater and soil cleanup plans.<\/p>\n\n

EM<\/a> has partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to preserve Braunton\u2019s milk-vetch, an endangered short-lived perennial plant in the pea family, at the Energy Technology Engineering Center<\/a> site.<\/p>\n\n

The preservation effort reflects EM's enduring commitment to protecting the community and environment as part of its broader mission to complete the safe cleanup of environmental legacy resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.
