To celebrate Veterans Day, EM highlights former service members who have joined EM on their journey in civilian work-life.
Name and what you do at EM?
My name is Peter C. Brito, and I work as a security specialist in security and emergency services in the Hanford Field Office.
What branch did you serve in; when; where stationed? How many years of service?
I served in the US Marine Corps from September 1996-September 2000. I was stationed in Okinawa Japan from 1997-1998, and 29 Palms California from 1998-2000. I served in the US Navy from October 2001-January 2019. Twenty-one total years served combined (US Marine Corps and US Navy). I was stationed on USS John C. Stennis as a military police investigator from 2001-2006. I was stationed at Command, Navy Region Southwest Criminal Investigations Division, San Diego from 2006-2009. I was stationed at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain as lead investigator and physical security specialist from 2009-2011. I was stationed at USS Decatur, San Diego, as chief master at arms from 2011-2013. I was stationed at San Clemente Island, California as the chief of police from 2013-2017. I was stationed at NSA Bahrain as chief of investigations from 2017-2019.
Most memorable event/moment during your service?
Tie between graduating Marine Corps boot camp and being pinned as a Navy chief.
How has your military service helped prepare you for the job you do in EM?
My service taught me teamwork, dedication to my job and service to my country. Working at EM I know there is a mission which depends on each and every one of us. The service helped me understand there is a bigger picture that my individual job supports, and the services brought out the best of character I have to offer DOE and EM.
When did you begin working for EM and what got you interested in the cleanup mission?
I began working for EM in July 31, 2023. I became interested in the cleanup mission because I wanted to come home (I grew up approximately 30 miles from Richland) after I served in the military and for Department of Defense, but I also wanted to continue working for this great country so it was a very easy decision to join this mission.
