AIKEN, S.C. – Deputy Energy Secretary David M. Turk and EM Senior Advisor William “Ike” White toured DOE facilities and the Aiken County Technology Laboratory (ACTL) during a visit to the Savannah River Site (SRS) Dec. 2-3.
Turk and White stopped at the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF), H Canyon facility, Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility, and ACTL. That laboratory was established at Aiken County’s Savannah River Research Campus to provide modern laboratory facilities for the Savannah River National Laboratory’s unclassified research and development in waste management, environmental sciences, and biotechnology. Turk and White also took a driving tour of the site that included the D-Area Ash Basin project.
During the visit, White participated in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for Saltstone Disposal Unit (SDU) 7 and a groundbreaking for SDUs 10, 11 and 12. SDU 7 construction was completed in 2019 and approved for operations in July. EM authorized construction of SDUs 10, 11, and 12 in September and site preparations are underway.

White also presented SRS employee Pam Marks with the DOE’s Federal Project Director of the Year Award for 2020. Marks served as the federal project director for SWPF from 2013 to its completion and readiness for operations. She currently serves as DOE Savannah River Operations Office assistant manager for nuclear material stabilization.
The visit concluded Dec. 3 with a partnering session with White, DOE-Savannah River personnel, and key members of Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), which was awarded the integrated mission completion contract Oct. 27. SRMC received the notice to proceed Nov. 29, which begins the 90-day transition period from the current liquid waste contractor, Savannah River Remediation.
