Construction on the 60,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) took a noticeable step forward as crews recently placed its last piece of structural steel, achieving an EM 2023 priority ahead of schedule.

AIKEN, S.C. — Construction on the 60,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) took a noticeable step forward as crews recently placed its last piece of structural steel, achieving an EM 2023 priority ahead of schedule and moving closer to providing accessible, modern and flexible laboratory space for Savannah River National Laboratory and its collaboration partners.
“It is exciting to see the visual progress achieved to date when compared to the design development work performed by the design team,” said Nixon Peralta, the DOE-Savannah River deputy federal project director. “Since construction started about eight months ago, we have been making substantial progress. We are about a month ahead of our internal project milestone to have all structural steel placed by the end of the year. The project is gearing up to start the building envelope construction phase.”
The AMC will combine the unique capabilities of the DOE national laboratories, industrial enterprises and educational institutions to drive practical, cost-effective solutions to many of the nation’s most challenging environmental cleanup and energy security challenges while supporting long-term sustainability of the United States manufacturing sector.
“The AMC will provide a manufacturing development venue for DOE mission work and facilitate academic and industry partnerships in state-of-the-art laboratory space,” said Tony Polk, director, Savannah River Laboratory Office.
An innovation hub for manufacturing, the AMC will foster modern industrial practices, advancing new technologies and providing grounds for training the future manufacturing workforce with a focus on chemical and material manufacturing.
“As a center for academic, commercial and government collaboration, the AMC will foster the innovation and workforce development needed to attract new manufacturing businesses to South Carolina,” Polk added.
The facility is being built on the University of South Carolina Aiken campus, next to the proposed National Guard Cybersecurity Readiness Center and collaboration space.
Plans include new laboratory, office and conference space suitable for advanced manufacturing research and development, and innovation space adaptable to collaborative ventures with academia and industry for commercializing new technologies.
The facility is expected to be completed by June 2025.
