Dear colleagues,
On behalf of Mr. Glenn Podonsky, Chief Health, Safety and Security Officer, I would like to thank everyone for their contribution to, and participation in, the Special Integrated Safety Management Workshop, Optimizing Activity-Level Work Planning and Control, which was held May 15-16, 2013. Briefly, the Workshop was held as a key element of the Deputy Secretary's November 30, 2012, response to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) summarizing several diverse initiatives and actions designed to further enhance and improve implementation of work planning and control (WP&C) at the activity level.
The Workshop was organized and supported through cooperation and collaboration amongst a wide spectrum of stakeholders and decisionmakers representing the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Office of Environmental Management (EM), Office of Science (SC), Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), Office of Health, Safety and Security (HSS), national laboratories, Department of Energy (DOE) contractors, Energy Facility Contractors Group (EFCOG), labor representatives, and the DNFSB. The participants were provided with multiple options and flexibility to listen in, present and discuss relevant topics in-person at the Forrestal Auditorium and remote via video teleconference and web conference.
The Workshop was designed to solicit feedback and facilitate dialogue on site-specific activity-level WP&C practices, issues, challenges, and lessons learned. The Workshop benefited from reaffirmation by then Acting Secretary of Energy, Daniel Poneman, of DOE's continued commitment to improving implementation of WP&C at the activity level. The Workshop was also greatly enhanced by a presentation prepared by the Chairman of the DNFSB emphasizing the critical contribution of "little things" to initiation of events leading to catastrophes. Additionally, the Workshop provided a venue for the senior leadership of NNSA, HQ Program Offices, and HSS to update the complex on status of progress made in meeting the Deputy Secretary's commitments.
A complete and detailed account of the Workshop proceedings are provided as part of this Web site to ensure continued access by the community to the content that was presented and discussed during the 2-day Workshop. This includes slides, as well as video recording of presentations.
We look forward to our continued journey to improve implementation of the activity-level WP&C.
Thank you
