October 30th marks the National Day of Remembrance for Nuclear Weapons Program Workers—a solemn day dedicated to the tens of thousands of men and women who answered the call of duty in the shadows, working tirelessly to secure our nation’s defense through their unwavering commitment to the nuclear weapons program. These remarkable Americans stood at the frontlines of national security, building and maintaining the nuclear weapons complex that served as a powerful shield for the United States during World War II, throughout the Cold War, and into the present day.

On this day, we also remember a landmark achievement in recognizing their service: the signing of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) into law on October 30, 2000. This act was a pivotal step toward justice for thousands who bravely faced health risks and hardships in their work within the nuclear weapons industry. Through the EEOICPA, the government has aimed to honor their sacrifices, acknowledging the toll their service took on their health and well-being, and making strides to ensure that these unsung heroes are never forgotten.

Our nuclear weapons workers showed unmatched dedication, day after day, clocking long hours in hazardous environments. Many labored in secrecy, unable to share with loved ones the nature of their work, yet driven by a profound sense of duty. This was not just work; it was a calling that carried immense pressures—to innovate, to keep pace, and to excel during one of history’s most intense arms races. Their efforts fueled astounding advancements, not only within the weapons programs but in technologies that benefit us daily—from early computing systems to life-saving breakthroughs in nuclear medicine.

We also celebrate the next generation of men and women within our nuclear security enterprise who carry this legacy forward. These dedicated public servants are committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent, addressing nuclear dangers worldwide, remediating environmental impacts, and pushing the frontiers of science and technology to create solutions for national and global challenges.

As we observe this National Day of Remembrance, let us reflect on the immense contributions of our nuclear weapons program workers, both past and present, and extend our gratitude for their enduring service to our country.

We invite you to participate in an event on October 30 celebrating the service of these men and women, and please click here to learn more about EEOICPA.

Let us stand together in gratitude, honoring those who dedicated their lives to safeguarding the United States.
