The U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office hosted a webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, to explore the nine water power topics in the latest round of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs

These topics are designed to support small businesses advancing hydropower and marine energy technologies, which capture energy from the movement and flow of water. These technologies are predictable, reliable, and well-suited to balance electricity grids with higher levels of variable renewable energy like solar power and wind energy, helping to power communities across the country.

The topics announced on Nov. 12, 2024, are:

  • Municipal and Industrial Conduit Hydropower
  • Innovations in Data Collection, Analytics, Models, and Tools (Energy-Water Nexus Crosscut)
  • Pumped Storage Hydropower Innovative Concepts
  • Co-Development of Marine Energy Technologies
  • Development of Standardized Modular Power Electronics for Grid-Compatible Marine Energy Systems
  • Advances in Overtopping Wave Energy Converters for Coastal Structures
  • Next-Generation Tidal and River Current Energy Technologies for Arctic/Alaskan Communities
  • Feasibility of Co-Locating Wave Energy and Offshore Wind
  • Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Topic (focused on advancements in hydropower and marine energy)

Webinar registration is now available.
