Over 14% of all the light-duty vehicles produced in 2022 had fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon (MPG) or higher, with 6.9% achieving fuel economy of 60 MPG or higher. The “Above 60” fuel economy band is composed of electric vehicles whose fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) where 33.7 kilowatt-hours are equal to 1 gallon of gasoline. In 1975, about two-thirds (67%) of all light-duty vehicles produced had fuel economy of 15 MPG or less, but in 2022 just 0.3% fell into this category.
Note: Data for 2022 are preliminary. These data are based on the 5-cycle test that utilizes city, highway, high-speed, cold start, and air conditioning tests as well as adjustment factors to provide data more representative of real-world driving. The data are weighted 43% city and 57% highway.
