New light-duty vehicle sales in 2022 totaled 13.84 million, an 8% decline from 2021. Historically, vehicle sales have experienced wide swings in response to economic factors, such as the 21% decline in sales from 2008 to 2009 during that recession. The decline in 2022 may be attributable to several factors, including supply chain issues that constrained vehicle production.
