NGLS NEEA Evaluation Takeaways

At the NEEA offices, six LED luminaires and connected lighting controls were installed to evaluate the retrofit of a “generic” 2x4 lighting system to an Enlighted luminaire level lighting control (LLLC) system. The lighting systems included linear and troffer products with integral sensors, a downlight with remote sensor, and an undercabinet linear tape light with remote sensor. The control system was a digital addressable lighting interface (DALI) D4i certified system. Feedback on installation and commissioning is shared below.

INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING

The installation contractor did not receive any design documentation, and outdated “as built” drawings misled the team on the current state of emergency lighting and the quantity of luminaires. The lack of accurate drawings cost several thousand dollars in unnecessary devices and labor. The crew was able to retrofit the first 11 2x4s in about three hours (approximately 15 minutes per luminaire). The linear fixtures were specified with a sensor on each end to have appropriate sensor coverage, however the sensors were not able to communicate correctly with each other so one was ultimately disconnected.

Commissioning was hampered by lack of experience—it was the programmer’s first time commissioning a DALI system and he noted that 2-wire DALI systems are still rare in the U.S. (in his experience). Enlighted recommended the commissioning process shown below.
