PROJECT PROFILE: Cell and Module Performance Characterization

Funding Opportunity: SuNLaMP
SunShot Subprogram: Photovoltaics
Location: National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, CO
Amount Awarded: $9,000,000

The project supports the cell and module measurement lab at NREL, which provides the only recognized, accredited efficiency measurements in the U.S. for the photovoltaic (PV) industry, and provides direct support to all SunShot programs through independent efficiency measurements and reference cell calibrations.

APPROACH

Within this effort, PV cells and modules of any design or technology will be characterized at the measurement lab at NREL with the fast turnaround time following the ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 requirements. In addition, the uncertainty analysis in the measurements will be performed and published and measurement uncertainty further reduced.

INNOVATION

The cell and module measurement lab is one of only four primary calibration labs in the world that can provide calibration traceability. This is important when determining current market conditions and annual power production. Most market reports that mentions the efficiency of a PV cell or module rely on this group for independent measurements.
