HydroGEN consortium director Dr. Huyen Dinh and H2NEW consortium co-director Dr. Bryan Pivovar participated in the 2nd International Gigaton Hydrogen Workshop in Tokyo, Japan. In conjunction with Japan’s Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), NREL planned an international workshop focused on international collaboration to achieve hydrogen production to the Gigaton scale. The workshop was held just prior to, and in support of, the  5th Research and Development for Clean Energy Technologies 20 (RD20) Conference in Fukushima, Japan from October 4-6, 2023. Dr. Pivovar presented an overview of the Gigaton Hydrogen Workshop at the RD20 and presented a poster alongside Dr. Dinh entitled “Clean Hydrogen Production: A Consortium Approach” that covered the acceleration of advanced water splitting technologies research and development that will enable clean hydrogen production by leveraging collaborative, consortium-driven research.

The RD20 is spearheaded by The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology to strengthen international collaboration and promote innovation by leading research institutes in G20 countries and regions that develop the world’s most advanced technologies for achieving carbon neutrality. This mission aligns with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office’s (HFTO) H2@Scale vision, and HydroGEN’s international participation accordingly contributes to the global clean hydrogen community, fosters partnerships, and promotes awareness of the state-of-the-art renewable hydrogen production research that the HFTO supports.
