The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) and the Hydrogen from Next-generation Electrolyzers of Water (H2NEW) consortium hosted the Advanced Materials for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzers workshop (H2-AMP) on March 30–31, 2022. This workshop supports the DOE's Hydrogen Energy Earthshot to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% and the Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
This meeting brought together leading PEM electrolyzer experts from academia, national laboratories, and industry to present on R&D opportunities in novel materials, industry needs, and more, to achieve future cost targets. In addition, there was in-depth discussion on a range of topics including novel oxygen evolution catalysts, membranes, interfaces and porous transport layers, and bipolar plates and coatings. This workshop emphasized developing advanced materials for PEM electrolyzers to achieve $2/kg H2 by 2026 and paving the way toward meeting the Hydrogen Shot goal of $1 per 1 kilogram in one decade.
