DOE Announces $40 Million in Funding for 29 Projects to Advance H2@Scale

Funded through the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), with contribution from DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy, the selected projects will advance the H2@Scale concept. The focus of H2@Scale is to enable affordable and reliable large-scale hydrogen generation, transport, storage, and utilization in the United States across multiple sectors. The selections will advance hydrogen storage and infrastructure technologies and identify innovative concepts for hydrogen production and utilization including grid resiliency. They also will help to address the challenge of making technologies to produce, deliver, store, and utilize hydrogen affordable enough to become mainstream.

DOE Announces $50 Million in Funding for Commercial Truck, Off-Road Vehicle, and Gaseous Fuels Research

The selections include $18 million for hydrogen and fuel cell applications and highlight DOE's priorities in gaseous fuels research, including natural gas, biopower, and hydrogen; heavy-duty freight electrification; hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell technologies for heavy-duty applications; and energy-efficient off-road vehicles.

DOE Celebrates National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day with Week-Long Activities

DOE joined thousands of hydrogen and fuel cell researchers, engineers, communicators and stakeholders in celebrating the fifth National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day on October 8. DOE and stakeholders worldwide commemorated the day with various activities and outreach events throughout the week including communications, blogs, announcements, ride and drives, 1.008-mile walks, technology displays, and much more.

Webinars and Workshops

Workshop: November 4, Long Beach, California—H2@Scale

As part of DOE's H2@Scale initiative, FCTO will hold a workshop on Monday, November 4, for experts in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and utilization to discuss R&D gaps and opportunities to realize the H2@Scale vision. This workshop will take place in parallel with the Fuel Cell Seminar and Energy Exposition November 4–7 in Long Beach, California. In addition, Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Berube will participate in the morning plenary session on Wednesday, November 6.

Workshop: November 13–14, Golden, Colorado—Hydrogen Carriers

As part of DOE's H2@Scale initiative, FCTO will hold a workshop bringing together stakeholders from industry, academia, and DOE national laboratories to determine the suitability and requirements of hydrogen carrier materials as a novel pathway for hydrogen transport and stationary storage. Note: Space is limited and preference will be on technical experts with relevant expertise in this topic.

2019 DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Report Released

DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program has released its 2019 Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Report, in which projects funded by the program are reviewed for their merit. The report summarizes the comments of expert peer reviewers at the 2019 Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Meeting, which was held April 29–May 1 in Crystal City, Virginia.

Standard Permitting Checklist for Hydrogen Stations Now Available on H2Tools

The checklist is available on H2Tools and will assist in demonstrating compliance with the Hydrogen Technologies Code for Outdoor Hydrogen Fueling Station applications. This checklist can simplify both the project development and safety review processes.

Hydrogen Liquefaction Cost Record Released

FCTO published a record that estimates the range of hydrogen liquefaction costs from $50 million to $800 million for capacities ranging from 6,000 kg/day to 200,000 kg/day, respectively. This information will feed in various models to advance in hydrogen production and delivery.

National Laboratory and Principal Investigator Achievements

Fuel Cell Researcher David Cullen Receives Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

President Donald J. Trump announced the recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), which includes David Cullen at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. David has received funding from FCTO in the past to address fuel cell R&D gaps. The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers and who show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology.

Fuel Cell Electrochemistry Scientist Nemanja Danilovic Awarded ECS-Toyota Fellowship

The Electrochemical Society (ECS) and Toyota awarded Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scientist and FCTO principal investigator Nemanja Danilovic a fellowship in innovative fuel cell electrochemistry research. Danilovic's work will focus on improving the understanding of interactions between catalysts and electrolytes so that fuel cell components can withstand increased temperatures.
