EERE Success Story: NREL-KPA-Toyota Collaboration Facilitates Permitting of FCEV Repair Facilities
Recently, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Hydrogen Sensor Laboratory was used in a partnership with KPA Services, LLC (KPA), at the request of Toyota Motors to validate hydrogen sensors for incorporation into their system to adapt vehicle repair facilities for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). See the success story.
Fact of the Month #18-02: Life-Cycle Water Consumption of Fuel Cell Vehicles Can Be Cut in Half Compared to that of Conventional ICEVs
Life-cycle water consumption of fuel cell electric vehicles using hydrogen produced from natural gas with steam methane reforming is almost 50% less than the life-cycle water consumption of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) using gasoline. If the hydrogen is produced from solar power and water, the life-cycle water consumption is almost 60% less.

Funding Opportunities and Requests for Information
Energy Department to Issue Upcoming FOA for High-Performance Computing for Materials Program
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) High-Performance Computing for Materials program seeks qualified industry partners to participate in short-term, collaborative projects with DOE’s national laboratories. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will release a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) with greater detail about this opportunity in the next few weeks. The forthcoming FOA will outline specific topics of interest for each office—Office of Fossil Energy, Fuel Cell Technologies Office, and Vehicle Technologies Office—supporting this solicitation.
Updates and future RFI and funding opportunity announcements will be posted on FCTO's funding opportunities website.

Webinar February 27: Techno-Economic Tools to Simulate the Costs of Hydrogen Infrastructure Technologies
The Fuel Cell Technologies Office presented a live webinar titled “Techno-Economic Tools to Simulate the Costs of Hydrogen Infrastructure Technologies” on Tuesday, February 27. In this webinar, Argonne National Laboratory explained how their publicly available models, such as the Hydrogen Delivery Scenario Analysis Model (HDSAM) and Heavy Duty Refueling Station Analysis Model (HDRSAM), can be used to simulate the costs of hydrogen delivery and dispensing into fuel cell vehicles. These models determine the levelized cost of hydrogen fuel in user-defined scenarios using discounted cash flow analysis and key assumptions of equipment costs and performance. Model assumptions have been derived and vetted through extensive industry engagement, but can also be modified by users to perform specialized analyses. The webinar taught interested users how to use these tools, and provided examples of case studies that have been completed to date. See slides from the webinar (recording coming soon).
