The Hydrogen Safety Panel (HSP) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has established a dedicated mentoring program to attract qualified individuals interested in gaining expertise in hydrogen safety and making meaningful contributions to HSP’s industry-critical safety work.
“We’re looking to cultivate a sustainable pool of new hydrogen safety experts to enable safe and timely transition to clean hydrogen on an increasingly larger scale,” said HSP Manager Nick Barilo. “As the domestic hydrogen economy grows in the coming years, industry will need additional safety experts ready to take on new challenges to ensure optimal safety in hydrogen production, deployment, and usage.”
The mentoring program is 24 months in duration, with successful candidates committing 16 hours per month. Minimum qualifications include:
- Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, safety engineering, electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, materials science, chemistry, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience working in hydrogen or a related industry.
- All applicants must be U.S. citizens.
Established in 2003, HSP currently features 23 panel members working collectively to identify and close safety gaps, and to leverage and disseminate evolving best practices. HSP is directly supported by the Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office.
