A workshop on alkaline membrane fuel cells (AMFCs) was held May 8–9, 2011, before the 2011 Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Annual Merit Review, at Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

The workshop brought together technical experts from industry, academia, and the national laboratories to assess the current state of AMFC technology and to identify limitations, performance potential, and key research needs for these systems.

The workshop began with formal presentations, which addressed specific aspects of the technology gaps that are barriers to cost reduction. After the presentations, two breakout groups were formed in each session to discuss cell stack technology improvements and system cost and manufacturing improvements.
