December H2IQ Hour: Subsurface Hydrogen Assessment, Storage, and Technology Acceleration (SHASTA)

December 15, 2023

This H2IQ Hour provided an update on the SHASTA project. Led by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, SHASTA unites four national laboratories—National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories—to determine the viability, safety, and reliability of storing pure hydrogen or hydrogen-natural gas blends in subsurface environments. Presenters included Dr. Angela Goodman with NETL and Dr. Nicolas Huerta with PNNL.

November H2IQ Hour: Hydrogen Safety Panel

October H2IQ Hour: HyBlend Initiative

October 26, 2023

This H2IQ Hour provided an overview of hydrogen blending materials and analysis research conducted under the Department of Energy's HyBlend initiative. Blending hydrogen with natural gas in existing natural gas pipelines has been identified as a promising way to reduce the carbon intensity of the natural gas grid and help accelerate the transition to a clean hydrogen economy. The HyBlend initiative addresses technical barriers in materials compatibility and conducts techno-economic and environmental life cycle analyses. Subject matter experts from four national laboratories discussed findings across each of these technical areas.

September H2IQ Hour: Decarbonizing Heavy-Duty Vehicles

September 21, 2023

This H2IQ Hour provided an overview of opportunities and challenges related to decarbonizing heavy-duty vehicles and the freight sector. Ahmet Kusoglu from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory discussed the potential role for hydrogen and fuel cells in this sector and presented highlights from recent reports to illustrate the case for greater deployment of fuel cell–electric trucks.

July H2IQ Hour: Overview of H2Rescue—Hydrogen Emergency Relief Vehicle

July 25, 2023

This H2IQ Hour provided an overview of H2Rescue, a collaborative interagency effort of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. The project is demonstrating a hydrogen fuel cell–powered truck designed to provide up to 72 hours of backup power and community support at disaster sites while emitting only water vapor.

June H2IQ Hour: Overview of Electrolyzer Operation at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station

June 26, 2023

This H2IQ Hour included an overview of electrolyzer operation at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station. This project, which began production this year and is the first of its kind in the United States, is demonstrating scale-up operation of clean hydrogen production from nuclear-powered electrolysis. The overview will be presented by Robert Beaumont, a project manager from Constellation Energy Group.

April H2IQ Hour Webinar: Update on Changes to the National Fire Protection Association Hydrogen Technologies Code (NFPA 2)

April 26, 2023

This H2IQ Hour included an update on changes to the bulk liquid hydrogen setback distances in the National Fire Protection Association Hydrogen Technologies Code (NFPA 2) 2023 edition. These changes were presented by researchers from Sandia National Laboratories, who developed the methodology and performed the underlying calculations and analyses that form the basis for the revised distances.

This H2IQ Hour included overview of hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) technologies. The webinar covered the technical, regulatory, and market drivers for H2ICE technologies, along with a history and current status of H2ICE technologies. This webinar also discussed key advances needed to bring these technologies to market as quickly and analysis comparing the fuel consumption, vehicle cost, total cost of ownership, and greenhouse gas emission benefits of H2ICE and fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles for truck applications.

This H2IQ Hour webinar provided an overview of the H2NEW (Hydrogen from Next-generation Electrolyzers of Water) Consortium. H2NEW is a consortium of nine U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories with world-class capabilities and expertise in low-temperature and high-temperature electrolyzers. In this webinar, experts from the national laboratories highlighted key accomplishments to date and showcased H2NEW's capabilities that can support collaborative R&D projects with industry, academia, and other stakeholders.
