Unit Heaters

As defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), “unit heater” means a self-contained fan-type heater designed to be installed within the heated space; however the term does not include a warm air furnace. 10 CFR 431.242 Manufacturers have been required to comply with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) energy conservation standards for Unit Heaters since 2008.

  • Unit heaters manufactured and distributed in commerce, as defined by 42 U.S.C. 6291(16), must meet the energy conservation standards specified in the Code of Federal Regulations at 431.246.

  • There are no test procedures for unit heaters because the energy conservation standard is a design standard.
