Buildings need to be flexible, resilient, and smarter. They use 74% of our nation's electricity and account for $370 billion in annual energy costs. Improving the energy efficiency of buildings is critical to lowering energy costs, strengthening resilience to extreme weather events, improving grid reliability, and making residential and commercial buildings more comfortable and affordable for all Americans. At the same time, buildings can also be a part of the solution.
The Emerging Technologies (ET) Program drives the Building Technologies Office mission to support research and development, validation, and integration of affordable, energy-saving technologies, strategies, analytical tools, and information services.
ET research projects help industry, national laboratories, and academia to implement innovative technologies at scale to reduce energy use and cost in both new and existing residential and commercial buildings. ET investments foster U.S. technical capabilities, leverage private funds, save energy and money, and create jobs.
