Project Objective

The ability to transfer heat and moisture between HVAC makeup air and exhaust air can significantly reduce HVAC energy consumption. Aspen Products Group Inc. will develop a unique high-performance water-permeable membrane to significantly enhance the performance of energy recovery ventilators (ERV). This project builds upon Phase 1, which met or exceeded all milestones, and proved capability of the new membrane to transfer humidity from a moist air stream to a dry air stream at over three times the flux of existing membranes and at lower cost. This Phase II program will demonstrate the scalability of the membrane manufacturing process and enable development of prototype ERV cores for third-party evaluation and long-term durability demonstrations.

Project Impact

The proposed energy recovery ventilator membrane will significantly shorten the payback period for ERVs and accelerate residential ERV adoption throughout the U.S., which could enable up to 3 Quads potential savings from additional air-sealing measures.
