The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) held a virtual informational webinar on April 16, 2024, from 1:30pm – 2:30pm ET, on the recently released 2023 Billion-Ton Report (BT23), an assessment of potential biomass resources available in the United States.
BT23—the fourth in a series of assessments of potential biomass resources since 2005—finds that 1 billion tons of biomass could satisfy over 100% of the projected demand for airplane fuel in the country, allowing the U.S. to decarbonize the aviation industry with sustainable aviation fuel.
During the webinar, speakers covered key findings of the report and discussed its significance and impact to the economy, environment, and industry. Other topics included:
- Feedstock data and market scenarios
- BT23 challenges
- Alignment with White House priorities and goals
- A demonstration of the publicly available BT23 data portal on the Bioenergy Knowledge Discovery Framework
Speakers included:
- BETO Director Dr. Valerie Sarisky-Reed
- BETO Technology Manager Dr. Mark Elless
- ORNL Natural Resource Economist Dr. Matthew Langholtz
- ORNL R&D Scientist Maggie Davis
