On September 25–26, 2019, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) hosted a workshop at Ames Laboratory on Iowa State University’s campus to discuss research and development related to the integration of advanced process technologies into first generation (1G) ethanol production facilities to co-produce cellulosic fuels, cellulosic sugars, and chemicals from corn fiber, and to convert or activate gaseous carbon dioxide. BETO was particularly interested in information on the development and verification of innovative process technologies and analytical methods for cost-competitive production of cellulosic biofuels and bio-products from non-starch feedstocks at 1G plants.
Attendees joined one of three breakout sessions to discuss Process Technology, Analytical Methods for Verification of Cellulosic Ethanol Production, or CO2 Conversion and Activation. Workshop participants also presented in the “Rapid Fire Short Talks,” which were five minute presentations to the group sharing relevant capabilities and expertise. Optional tours of the Ames Laboratory or Lincolnway Energy LLC Nevada, IA ethanol plant were offered at the conclusion of the workshop.
