The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) announced the 2024 community partners for the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Technical Assistance for State, Local, and Tribal Governments Program. Funding collaborations between NREL and state, local, and Tribal government entities, the program will provide technical assistance for 20 communities in 14 states.

The WTE Technical Assistance program provides quantification of local waste resources, strategic planning support, and evaluation of sustainable WTE pathways, among other high priority matters. BETO and NREL have assisted more than 55 diverse communities since the program’s inception in 2021.

The program was established to mobilize national laboratory analyses and technical expertise around energy and resource recovery from organic waste streams such as food waste, sewage sludge, and animal manure, as well as fats, oils, and greases. Waste resources for consideration this year were expanded to include plastics, paper, cardboard, and wood waste.

Waste-to-energy related knowledge gaps, specific challenges, decision-making considerations, planning, and project implementation strategies in those communities are all addressed in the program. In addition, insights and analyses from this program provide an avenue for states, counties, municipalities, and Tribal governments to make informed decisions about closing waste loops and generating additional value streams from waste.
