The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) hosted a two-day webinar series, Biocarbon Incorporation into Transportation Fuels via Co-processing in Refineries, to highlight the key takeaways from the Bio-oil Co-processing with Refinery Streams project. This project aimed to generate foundational knowledge for processing renewable intermediates in petroleum refineries and offer co-processing strategies, as well as develop new methods for biogenic carbon tracking and measurement.
The webinars featured technical and subject matter experts from BETO and DOE national laboratories. Through presentations and a questions & answer session, stakeholders discussed the following topics:
Webinar Day 1, September 20, 2023: Co-processing Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oils and Hydrothermal Liquefaction Bio-crudes in Fluid Catalytic Cracking and Hydroprocessing in Refineries
This webinar focused on the challenges and findings of co-processing of woody fast pyrolysis bio-oils in fluid catalytic cracking, as well as woody pyrolysis bio-oils and wet waste hydrothermal liquefaction bio-crudes in hydrotreating and hydrocracking.
Webinar Day 2, September 27, 2023: Biogenic Carbon Tracking and Measurement in Co-processing of Biogenic Feeds in Petroleum Refineries
This webinar discussed the development of inexpensive and deployable isotope-based techniques for biogenic carbon tracking, specifically the d13C method and the 14C LSC (Liquid Scintillation Counting).
