U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm is hosting her counterparts from energy ministries across the world in Pittsburgh, PA, September 21–23, 2022 for the Global Clean Energy Action Forum (GCEAF).
Nearly 4,000 delegates from governments, international organizations, industry, academia, innovators, and non-governmental agencies (NGOs) have already registered. The three-day event will cover the entire cleantech spectrum via ministerial plenaries, topical roundtables, and over 100 technology-specific events.
Energy and science ministers from 31 countries, along with business executives and experts from around the world, will gather to discuss how to deliver a clean energy future. Notable speakers will include:
- Jennifer Granholm, Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy
- John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate
- Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency
- Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy, European Commission
- Bill Gates, Co-Chair, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- Jigar Shah, Director, Loan Programs Office, U.S. Department of Energy
- Danielle Merfeld, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, General Electric Renewable Energy
- Anne Simpson, Global Head of Sustainability, Franklin Templeton.
Rapid Innovation and Deployment of Clean Energy
This year’s GCEAF theme is Rapid Innovation and Deployment. Attendees will attempt to develop answers to questions including:
- How can we accelerate the pace and scale of innovation for the deployment of clean energy technologies?
- How can we collaborate across the innovation-to-deployment continuum and deploy commercially viable technologies in time to combat the climate crisis in this urgent decade of delivery?
Focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel
During the forum, members from Brazil, Canada, India, Netherlands, and the United States will collaborate with industry leaders and additional country partners to focus global attention on what needs to be done to accelerate the production and use of sustainable, low greenhouse gas (GHG) emission fuels, chemicals, and materials.
Known collectively as the Clean Energy Ministerial Biofuture Platform Initiative, members lead global actions to accelerate development, scale-up, and deployment of sustainable biobased alternatives to fossil-based fuels, chemicals, and materials.
The Initiative, chaired by the U.S. Department of Energy and facilitated by the International Energy Agency, provides a forum for policy dialogue and collaboration among leading countries, organizations, academia, and industry via the Biofuture Campaign. The current Clean Energy Ministerial Initiative was spring boarded by the original 22-country Biofuture Platform Initiative, established in 2016 under Brazil’s leadership.
Events on Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Carbon Accounting
During GCEAF, the Biofuture Platform Initiative will organize two prominent events focused on sustainable aviation fuel and the importance of carbon accounting to the future of de-fossilization. The sustainable aviation fuel event is co-organized with Clean Skies for Tomorrow,a collaboration between the World Economic Forum, Rocky Mountain Institute, and industry partners.
The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Loan Program Offices will host the Biofuture Business Forum, which will address sustainable aviation fuel project finance and the relevance of best practices in carbon accounting to project finance. These topics will be discussed with a wide range of investors from institutions such as Barclays, BlackRock, and Vanguard Renewables.
The Global Clean Energy Action Forum comes at a pivotal time. We are on the cusp of the most important transition human society has ever seen, and we must look back at 2022 as the year the world took giant steps to build a new energy economy that benefits all, improves energy security, tackles climate change, and reaps the rewards of a clean energy market that will exceed $23 trillion by the end of this decade.
