The Agile BioFoundry (ABF) consortium, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), is announcing a funding opportunity to support competitively selected Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) between BETO's laboratory consortia and partners from industry. The CRADA provides resources to perform research for:

  • Developing novel microbial hosts,
  • Augmenting titer, rate and yield of bioproducts,
  • Creating new capabilities and approaches to improve the Design-Build-Test-Learn biomanufacturing cycle.

Applicants should submit a proposal that is relevant to the mission of the ABF and leverages the consortium’s world-class capabilities to address challenges in biomanufacturing. Submissions should also clearly identify how the work addresses BETO's goals of supporting the decarbonization of various industrial sectors, including development of sustainable bio-based products, sustainable aviation fuels, or other impacts in transportation.

At least $3M will be available for this CRADA call and as many as four projects will be selected with a project duration of up to three years. Note that federal funds will support activities at the ABF national laboratories only, and that project partners are required to provide a 20% cost share (including in-kind).

Feasibility submissions are due April 21, 2023, and final proposals will be due June 2, 2023. Visit the ABF website for more information about the contents of the funding opportunity and the application process.
