The U.S Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are launching the next phase of Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance. The 2024 program eligibility has been expanded to include state governments and the program’s scope now includes additional waste resources.

Food and wood waste, wastewater sludge, plastics, paper, and other materials represent significant environmental, economic, and social sustainability challenges for communities. Given that these waste streams require local solutions on various aspects of their management, such as existing uses and costs of disposal, this technical assistance program provides U.S. states, counties, municipalities, and tribal governments with the most relevant data for their decision-making.

Insights gained from this program can help communities evaluate the most sensible end-uses for their waste, such as repurposing for on-site heat/power, transportation fuels, resource recovery, or other options. BETO will provide subject matter assistance on the following topics:

  • Waste resource information
  • Infrastructure considerations
  • Techno-economic comparison of energy and resource recovery options
  • Evaluation and sharing of case studies (to the extent possible) from similar communities/projects
  • Equity assessments

The 2024 Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance application portal opened today, March 4, 2024, and applications will be accepted from March 4, 2024, through April 15, 2024. For information on applicant eligibility and how to apply, please visit the Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance web page.
