Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy
March 23, 2021The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) invites interested stakeholders to register to attend upcoming workshops that explore current and emerging challenges and opportunities in manufacturing and inform our future research and development (R&D) portfolio. Workshops throughout 2021 will focus on how to improve energy efficiency, material productivity, and competitiveness for U.S. manufacturers while reducing the sector’s carbon footprint.
New workshops will be released on a rolling basis. Visit the AMO website for up-to-date information on upcoming workshop topics and registration details.
CABLE R&D Virtual Workshop
April 7-9, 2021
Help AMO create a new materials, manufacturing, and applications research ecosystem to support Conductivity-enhanced materials for Affordable, Breakthrough Leapfrog Electric and thermal applications (CABLE).
The benefits of improving conductors will be far reaching. If successful, these technologies will lower the cost and impact of adding renewables to the grid, maximize next-generation energy storage technologies, and support electrification for energy-intensive sectors such as transportation and manufacturing. These capabilities are key to developing a 100% clean energy grid by 2035 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions across the economy by 2050.
The three-part workshop will feature presentations, discussions, and breakout sessions on:
- Applications of conductivity-enhanced materials across the electricity distribution system, transportation, energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors
- Enhanced conductivity materials fabrication
- Materials modeling and simulation.

AMO recently announced the CABLE Conductor Manufacturing Prize, which will award up to $4.5 million in prizes and vouchers to spur development of affordable, manufacturable materials that increase the energy efficiency of all electric devices and move us toward to a clean energy future. Semiconductor R&D for Energy Efficiency Workshop 2: Ultra-Precision Control for Ultra-Efficient Devices
April 21-23, 2021
Join AMO for the second workshop in its series on semiconductor R&D. While the first semiconductor workshop focused on the potential for semiconductor-based integrated sensor systems to increase manufacturers’ energy efficiency, this workshop will concentrate on the role of ultra-precision control in enabling manufacturable, ultra-energy-efficient (e.g., > 10x more efficient than conventional MOSFET) semiconductor devices.
The workshop will feature presentations, discussions, and breakout sessions on:
- Ultra-energy efficient device R&D across federal agencies
- Plenary by Semiconductor Research Corporation on the SRC/SIA plan for 1,000,000x improvements in semiconductor energy efficiency
- Ultra-precise manufacturing processes and tools
- Research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) synergies and challenges with devices, manufacturing, and tools.
For more information, and to view the workshop objectives, technical topics, and agenda, visit the event website.
On the Horizon
Stay tuned for three additional upcoming workshops.
Topics will include:
- Workforce development
- Electrochemistry in manufacturing
- The future of manufacturing
