University of Maine Unveils World’s Largest 3D Printer

Researchers at the University of Maine unveiled the world's largest 3D-printer earlier this month. AMO funds work between DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Maine that supports an effort to study key technical areas in large-scale bio-based additive manufacturing, including cellulose. The work will focus on use of bio-based materials, such as nanocellulosic fibers, for large-scale 3D printing. The new printer with both additive and precise subtractive manufacturing capabilities will enable rapid prototyping of large defense and civilian platforms.


Statement from Secretary Perry on 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry offers the Department’s congratulations to the 2019 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, especially Stanley Whittingham and John Goodenough – whom DOE has been privileged to support for much of their careers. Their work in batteries and energy storage will have a lasting effect as they drastically improve technology in everything from cellphones and laptops to pacemakers, electric vehicles, and grid resiliency.


NOI: DOE Plans to Issue Funding Opportunity for High Performance Computing

DOE’s High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) program will issue its third joint solicitation in November 2019, covering the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) and High Performance Computing for Materials (HPC4Mtls) programs. DOE will seek qualified industry partners to participate in short-term collaborative projects with DOE’s National Laboratories. Selected projects will be awarded up to $300,000 to support computing cycles and work performed by the National Lab partners. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Applications for Cyclotron Road Cohort 2020 Now Open!

Cyclotron Road, part of DOE's Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Programs, is accepting applications for two-year entrepreneurial fellowships. Selected fellows will receive an $80,000-$110,000 yearly living stipend, access to world class research facilities, and unparalleled support in moving their ideas from science to product. The application deadline is Wednesday, November 6, 2019.


AMO Celebrates Manufacturing Day

On Friday, October 4, 2019, AMO joined many manufacturers from the around the country in celebrating Manufacturing Day. Valri Lightner, AMO Deputy Director, visited the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she toured a few manufacturing research labs and the school's combined heat and power plant that supplies electricity and heat to the campus. AMO Releases Project Updates on Nanotechnology Day

AMO celebrated National Nanotechnology Day on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 by releasing new and updated resources on “nanomanufacturing” research and development projects within AMO's portfolio. AMO-funded research in “nanomanufacturing” involves scaled-up, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing of nanoscale materials, structures, devices, and systems. RFP: REMADE Institute to Solicit Proposals for Two Focus Areas

The REMADE Institute issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit projects to support research and development (R&D) and education and workforce development that will enable U.S. manufacturers to increase the recovery, recycling, reuse, and remanufacturing of plastics and other materials. REMADE will invest approximately $24 million with 50% in REMADE funding and 50% awardee cost-share and fund approximately 12 to 18 exploratory and full R&D projects aligned with REMADE’s research focus areas, as well as 4-8 education and workforce development projects.
