Lessons Learned from Assessments of Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal Practices at U.S. Department of Energy Facilities

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environment, Safety and Health Assessments, within the independent Office of Enterprise Assessments (EA), conducted assessments at five DOE nuclear sites between 2015 and 2017, as part of a DOE complex-wide evaluation of low-level radioactive waste management practices. The facilities are managed under the direction of the Office of Environmental Management and the National Nuclear Security Administration. The individual EA assessment results were analyzed to provide this lessons-learned report, which focuses on issues that affect multiple facilities and identifies areas of strengths and weaknesses with the goal of promoting organizational learning and improving performance.
