Building the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) professionals and skilled workers is critical to DOE’s mission. DOE supports a continuum of STEM training, education, and engagement opportunities—from the K-12 level to the skilled technical worker and the Ph.D.-trained scientist or engineer level – that recognize the needs and challenges for creating a future DOE STEM workforce that is agile and innovative.

Launched in December 2022, DOE STEM is a collaborative effort to share, improve, and increase accessibility to all DOE has to offer for the training, education, and engagement of STEM students, educators, professionals, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers. The DOE STEM initiative has brought together experts in scientific training and workforce development across DOE offices to leverage their diversity of backgrounds and expertise in the development of the site.

Text: In DOE STEM's first year, 50,000 people visited to find.. 170 STEM Events, 150 STEM Announcements, 130 Participant Highlights, 50 STEM Resources, 90 STEM Opportunities

Since its inception, DOE STEM has expanded the topics covered and content provided in response to the needs and interests of its user base and to highlight the variety of opportunities supported by DOE that support career development and career transitions. Throughout the year, the site’s homepage regularly features new STEM events, participant highlights, and monthly videos in order to share up-to-date and exciting content with DOE STEM users.

New pages and content added to the site in 2023 represent a broad view of STEM offerings at the Department:

  • Added in January 2023, the Upcoming Events & Deadlines calendar provides access to information about DOE’s STEM program application deadlines, webinars, conference involvement, and more
  • Updated in July 2023, the STEM at Energy YouTube playlist collects videos produced by DOE and national laboratories to provide resources and information for students and educators
  • Added in August 2023, the Entrepreneurship Opportunities page offers resources for entrepreneurs and details about open entrepreneurship challenges sponsored by the Department
  • Added in September 2023, the Planning for the Future Energy Workforce page houses a collection of DOE mission-related workforce analysis reports developed by DOE offices, committees, and other federal entities
  • Added in October 2023, the Beyond100K FIRST STEPS resource is part of a growing set of resources DOE is creating to engage Tribal communities in DOE sponsored programs, investments, and opportunities

DOE STEM will continue to increase awareness and improve accessibility for DOE-sponsored STEM opportunities, resources, and information. We look forward to welcoming new visitors to Discover the World of Energy in 2024!
