Building Cybersecurity into the Nation’s Energy Sector through Education, Public-Private Partnerships – Opportunity to Apply Closes on August 29th

Cybersecurity experts are increasingly the first line of defense for the nation’s critical infrastructure.  As the risk to physical infrastructure from cyber attacks continues to evolve, it’s important for the workforce behind our nation’s energy providers to grow to meet that risk. DOE wants you to become part of that expanding network of cyber defenders through its Operational Technology (OT) Defender Fellowship 2025 Cohort.

DOE’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) launched the OT Defender Fellowship in 2020 in collaboration with DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and with support from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ (FDD) Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation (CCTI). Fellows in this selective year-long education program will gain a greater understanding of the OT threat landscape while strengthening their ability to defend critical energy infrastructure. The Fellowship features:

  • Four in-person sessions throughout the year, including a scenario-driven capstone exercise.
  • Networking opportunities with peers and cyber experts in U.S. government departments and agencies, including:
  • Department of Energy (DOE)
  • Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
  • Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD)
  • National Security Agency (NSA)
  • Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
  • U.S. Secret Service (USSS)
  • Other federal agencies and congressional experts
  • In-depth learning about the strategies tools and tactics the U.S. government is using to counter threats, mitigate vulnerabilities, and reduce risk to our critical infrastructure.
  • Skill-building to apply knowledge gained in the Fellowship to their specific professional roles in the energy sector.

The OT Defender Fellowship is open to middle- and senior-level professionals at asset owner-operators in the U.S. energy sector, including electricity, oil, natural gas, and renewable energy companies. The Fellowship is typically limited to 15 participants.
