This Earth Day, the Department of Energy is hosting “Sunrise to Sunset” National Lab Earth Day, a collective celebration of energy and environmental research with engaging virtual science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities across the country.
Sunrise to Sunset will highlight all 17 of our national laboratories through tours, activities, short talks, and panels. The DOE is committed to delivering a clean energy future and investing in our planet. We hope to celebrate collective action with interactive activities and resources.

On Friday morning, you’ll hear from Jefferson Lab in Virginia about astronomy, telescopes, and the solar system. You’ll even get to see a close look at the sun through a telescope!
The day continues with virtual tours of our labs, as well as talks from our amazing DOE scientists, and hands-on demos about plasma, recycling, and solar ovens. You won’t want to miss our multi-lab events, where our wonderful national laboratory researchers will host a moderated panel about their career path as well as their research. Tune in for these events at noon and 3:15 PM ET.
In the afternoon, learn about an easy way to use nature’s “living garbage disposal” to recycle food scraps into a nutrient rich compost for your plants from Fermilab in Illinois.
Later, our scientists will help you express your creativity through clean energy demos. Join New Mexico’s Sandia National Laboratory engineers in building your own solar oven, and National Energy Technology Laboratory educators in Pennsylvania in making your own wind turbine from basic materials.
Finally, we will also have presentations on various topics, including the role of microalgae in global carbon cycling, the future of automated driving, and breaking down plastics.
You won’t want to miss the closing ceremony at 8 PM ET, which circles back on the start of the day by showing a traditional sunrise ceremony from Idaho National Laboratory. They will host tribal elders from the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe, along with their neighbors and partners, for this collaborative project, which will be held at sunrise the morning of Earth Day and then broadcast at our event for a special closing for the day.

Alena Sergueev is an intern for the DOE Office of Public Affairs for the Spring of 2022, through the DOE Student Volunteer Program. As a creative individual, she has been applying her experience and vision to graphics and social media content during her internship. Alena is a junior majoring in International Relations with minors in Chinese and International Development and Conflict Management at the University of Maryland. After graduation, she hopes to pursue research in international relations, especially as it relates to environmental politics and development.
