DOE's Carbon Dioxide Removal: Purpose, Approaches, and Recommendations Draft Report for Public Comment

As part of the Energy Act of 2020 (P.L 116-260, 42 USC 16298e), Congress directed the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to deliver a report on carbon dioxide removal (CDR). To inform this report, DOE organized an Interagency CDR Task Force to collect insights on CDR approaches, policies, and options from federal staff representing ten agencies.

This draft report represents results uncovered from the work of the Interagency CDR Task Force. It identifies the likely needs for the future research and deployment of CDR, outlines current and emerging CDR approaches, provides a high-level assessment of the approaches, and offers insight into potential federal policies and measures that could significantly contribute to the advancement of CDR deployment.

On January 16, 2025, DOE posted this report for the first time as a draft for public comment. Comments can be submitted to [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2025. We seek feedback on the entire report to ensure our analysis is as robust and reasonable as possible.

Note: All comments received are considered a Federal record and will be stored and potentially accessed in the future as part of our official documentation.
