As 2024 comes to a close, the Office of Worker Screening and Compensation Support (EHSS-14), Office of Health and Safety, highlights a few recent meetings for the Former Worker Medical Screening Program (FWP). The FWP is collectively administered through five separate cooperative agreement holders that DOE funds to perform screenings across the country.
BTMed Annual Meeting
In early November, the Building Trades National Medical Screening Program (BTMed) held their annual team meeting in Destin, Florida. Participants included representatives from BTMed; Department of Labor (DOL); and DOE EHSS. DOE was represented with Greg Lewis, Director, Office of Worker Screening and Compensation Support, and Regina Griego Kelleher, EEOICPA Program Manager, in attendance. Over the course of the two-day meeting, the agenda included presentation topics such as BTMed Operations; Understanding Lung Diseases; Compensation and its role in BTMED and EEOICPA; and a Research Roundtable.
WHPP Annual Meeting
Two weeks later, on November 14 and November 15, the Worker Health Protection Program (WHPP) held their annual meeting in Washington, DC. WHPP is administered by the Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment at Queens College of the City University of New York, in conjunction with the United Steelworkers (USW), the Atomic Trades and Labor Council (ATLC) in Oak Ridge, and the Fernald Medical Screening Program. Participants included representatives from Queens College; Johns Hopkins University (JHU), School of Public Health; USW; ATLC; DOL; and EHSS, DOE.
WHPP Program Coordinators share their perspectives in the field
EHSS was well represented with Mr. Christopher Roscetti, Deputy Director, Office of Environment, Health, Safety and Security; Kevin Dressman, Director, Office of Health and Safety; Greg Lewis, Director, Office of Worker Screening and Compensation Support; and Lokie Harmond, Program Manager, Office of Worker Screening and Compensation Support.
Over the course of the two-day meeting, some agenda presentation topics included WHPP Program Highlights 2023-2024; Los Alamos and Sandia New Mexico Worker Screening Expansion; USW Activities 2023-2024; WHPP Site Reports; DOL EEOICPA Updates; and Occupational Safety and Health Administration Updates.
DOE Former Worker Medical Screening Program Biannual Meeting
On December 5, EHSS-14 hosted the Former Worker Medical Screening Program’s biannual meeting in the Forrestal Building, which provides an opportunity for all five FWP cooperative agreement holders and partners to discuss FWP priorities and future planning activities. Participants included representatives from DOE EHSS, the Worker Health Protection Program (WHPP), the National Supplemental Screening Program (NSSP), the Building Trades National Medical Screening Program (BTMed), the Pantex Former Worker Program and the University of Iowa Former Worker Program.
Notable DOE speakers included Mr. Todd Lapointe, Director, Office of Environment, Health, Safety and Security; Mr. Christopher Roscetti, Deputy Director, Office of Environment, Health, and Safety; and Ms. Robin Elgart, Director, Domestic and International Health Studies, Office of Health and Safety.
The biannual meeting agenda included presentation topics such as Perspectives on Outreach Experience; Hearing Loss and Dementia: Analysis and Implications for Prevention and Compensation; Screening Current DOE Workers for Lung Cancer; Longitudinal Surveillance for Chronic Health Conditions in Former DOE Site Workers; DOL Advisory Board on Toxic Substances and Workers’ Health; Advancing Silicosis Research: The Role of CT Imaging in the Detection of Silicosis; Discussion of updated DOL procedure requiring three borderline BeLPT results; Hearing Loss and All-Cause Mortality among BTMed Participants; FWP and DOE Worker Survivor; and Discussion on DOE Former Worker Rosters and Site Point of Contacts.
