Resilience and Prosperity in Rural Northern Wisconsin
OCED awarded the Resilience and Prosperity in Rural Northern Wisconsin project—led by the Wisconsin Office of Sustainability and Clean Energy (OSCE)—with nearly $400,000 (of the total project federal cost share of up to $9.7 million) to begin Phase 1 activities. The project plans to construct 27 innovative microgrid systems across the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s tribal land and Bayfield County in northern Wisconsin. The proposed project intends to improve resilience against power outages by deploying solar power, battery storage, smart controls enabling islanding, and electric vehicle charging stations. Once fully operational, the project is expected to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 1,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide—improving residents’ capacity to ensure a healthy environment for generations to come. During Phase1 of the project, OSCE will conduct planning and development activities, including securing agreements, providing input into OCED’s National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review, and initiating community and labor engagement.
