The Bioenergy Research and Education Bridge Program (BRIDGES) is partnering with the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) to host the BRIDGES Bioenergy 101 Virtual Workshop on October 17, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET. Educators will be introduced to bioenergy national laboratory research that can be integrated into classrooms. Bioenergy knowledge is not required.

Created by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, BRIDGES is a bioenergy education curriculum that includes four case studies covering sustainable aviation fuel, upcycling plastics, bioenergy feedstocks, and waste-to-energy potential. Case studies can be taught in diverse settings, including high schools, technical and community colleges, and universities, and are designed to introduce students to exciting careers in the bioenergy industry.

Led by national laboratory experts, this BRIDGES workshop will focus on the Regional Feedstocks: Are they the Answer to Achieving a Net Zero Future? case study. During the workshop, educators will learn how to introduce their students to sustainability challenges and benefits of biofuels for the transportation industry by evaluating regional biomass and waste resources.

In addition, educators will discover how each bioenergy case study can provide opportunities to understand culturally responsive agriculture and energy practices, while increasing awareness about environmental and community impacts.

Workshop panelists from DOE and the national laboratories will:

  • Provide an overview of the BRIDGES program.
  • Explain how to access the BRIDGES National Laboratory Case Study Toolkits.
  • Participate in a walk-through and break-out sessions for the Regional Feedstocks Case Study.
  • Empower science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers to facilitate learning with knowledge-building bioenergy curriculum.
  • Demonstrate how BRIDGES can provide an opportunity for students to develop and strengthen skills in problem solving, complex decision-making, and understanding research and development dynamics.

To prepare for the workshop, download and review the BRIDGES Regional Feedstocks Instructor’s Guide located in the BRIDGES Portal. For more information, email [email protected].
