Description/Duties:

This position is in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) and serves as a Program Manager for the Materials Technology team.

Materials play an important role in increasing the efficiency of electric vehicles through weight reduction as well as enabling additional functionality such as faster charging and new sensing technologies. Lighter weight vehicle structures and electric drivetrains will require less battery power to achieve the same range, which in turn reduces battery cost, critical material needs, and reduces the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from battery production. Multi-functional materials with improved properties such as electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and unique sensing capabilities will enable innovations in charging and autonomous vehicles. The materials and manufacturing methods used to make vehicles account for about 30% of a vehicle’s lifecycle GHGs, and the Materials Technology team supports research, development, and deployment to increase recyclability and reduce the overall embodied energy of vehicles, thereby reducing the vehicle's GHG emissions footprint.

At the GS-15 level, the Program Manager provides technical expertise to office leadership in support of program planning pertaining to lightweight structural and powertrain materials for vehicles. This position develops technical goals and objectives for the program and prioritizes research activities within allocated funding. The Program Manager engages with stakeholders in industry, academia, and the national laboratories, and represents VTO to the public through presentations.

This is a supervisory position; the Program Manager is responsible for leading a team of technical experts who identify research gaps, solicit proposals to address those gaps, and manage awarded projects. The Program Manager monitors progress of funded projects and supports employees as-needed and on underperforming projects. This position is responsible for building and promoting a team-based work culture that is inclusive, collaborative, and maximizes talent.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required to Perform the Work/Specialized Experience:

  • Demonstrated technical experience with relevant materials technologies (i.e., advanced high strength steel, structural aluminum, magnesium, polymer composites, automotive assembly / welding / joining, electrical steel, hard and soft magnetic materials, and copper or aluminum wiring).
  • Knowledge of light-, medium-, or heavy-duty vehicle manufacturing and technology trends.
  • Excellent written and oral communication ability, including the ability to summarize technical information for non-technical audiences.

Additional Details:

Occasional multi-day travel will be required. Financial disclosure is required, and incumbent may be required to pass a background investigation.
