Are you ready to model the value of geothermal energy in the nation's electricity grid?
Let’s find out how to navigate the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office’s Geothermal Resources’ Value in Implementing Decarbonization (GRID) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) with this Quick Guide!
The GTO GRID FOA will provide up to $7 million to support regional grid modeling studies that quantify the potential contribution of renewable, firm geothermal power in supporting the nation's future grid and economy.
This guide provides tips for the key items you’ll need—but be sure to read the FOA in its entirety, too!

- Determine if the opportunity is a good fit for you. If you’re ready to use grid modeling and/or analysis approaches to further understanding of geothermal power’s value to the grid, chances are the answer is yes!
- Sections I.A. and I.B. of the FOA provide details that can help you understand the purpose and strategic goals of this funding, as well as the Topic Area.
- Sections II.A.i. and III.B. provide information on the funding available and the cost share you may need to provide in order to participate.
- Make sure you’re eligible by reviewing the eligibility requirements in Section III of the FOA.
- Review Section IV.C to prepare your Letter of Intent (required) and submit by the deadline.
- Write your application! Make sure your application is compliant by reading Sections III.C and III.D. Then, consider the Technical Review Criteria and Program Policy Factors in Sections V.A and V.C.i. in developing your application materials.
- Find new partners. A Teaming Partner List is available to help connect you to potential partners and create effective, multi-disciplinary teams. Learn more in Section I.A.iii.
- Edit and review your application to ensure you have covered everything that’s needed and that you meet the requirements in the Application and Submission Information in Section IV.
