May 8, 2024The U.S. Department of Energy's Hydrogen Program presented its annual awards at the 2024 Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Meeting on May 6. Each year, the Hydrogen Program presents awards to individuals from partner institutions for contributions to overall program efforts and to recognize research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) achievements in specific areas.
This year’s awardees include:
Hydrogen Program Lifetime Achievement Award
Nenad Markovic (Argonne National Laboratory) for 40 years of invaluable contributions to advancing the fields of catalysis and surface electrochemistry.
Piotr Zelenay (Los Alamos National Laboratory) for over 25 years of outstanding leadership and achievement in advancing PGM-free electrocatalysis.
Hydrogen Program Special Recognition Award
Keith Wipke (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) for over 20 years of outstanding leadership in advancing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies critical to the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy.
Safety, Codes and Standards; Systems Development and Integration; and Hydrogen Infrastructure
Shaun Onorato, Taichi Kuroki, Jamie Kee (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), Krishna Reddi (Argonne National Laboratory), and Lauren Mattar (NextEnergy) for outstanding leadership in the development, assessment, and validation of heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicle fueling protocols and fueling hardware as well as active coordination with industry and the international regulations, codes, and standards community.
Hydrogen Production
Chris Capuano (Nel Hydrogen) for outstanding leadership in development and commercialization of water electrolyzers for hydrogen production.
Shaun Alia (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) for outstanding leadership in developing durable alkaline exchange membrane and proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers.
Hydrogen Infrastructure—Storage
Duane Byerly, Chris Wilson, and Rick Rashilla (Hexagon R&D LLC) in recognition of outstanding achievements in reducing carbon fiber and storage tank costs and advancing to Phase II of the DOE low-cost carbon fiber program.
Fuel Cell Technologies
Emory De Castro (Advent Technologies) for significant contributions to the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell technologies.
Systems Development and Integration
Paul Wang (Caterpillar Inc.) for outstanding leadership in the development and demonstration of a hydrogen fuel cell backup power system at a large data center.
Ron O’Malley (Missouri University of Science and Technology) and Sridhar Seetharaman (Arizona State University) for outstanding achievements in demonstrating the potential for hydrogen to decarbonize iron and steel manufacturing through innovative research and tenacious problem solving.
