Rich Janati joined the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) in 1985 as a Nuclear Engineer. He managed the Nuclear Safety, Radiological Emergency Preparedness, and Radioactive Waste Programs from 1994 through 2020. At present, he provides technical advice and consultation to the PA DEP’s Bureau of Radiation Protection and serves on the Department of Energy’s Environmental Management Advisory Board. He is also the Administrator of the Appalachian States Low-Level Radioactive Waste Compact Commission. Before joining PA DEP, he served as a Utility Valuation Engineer at the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Prior to this tenure, he was a Nuclear Fuel Safety and Licensing Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
Janati is a member of several professional organizations including the American Nuclear Society, Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, Low-Level Radioactive Waste Forum, and the Northeast High-Level Radioactive Waste Transportation Task Force.
Janati holds a bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and a Master of Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
