DOE Launches Fourth Edition of the Technology Commercialization Internship Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) launched the fourth round of its Technology Commercialization Internship Program (TCIP). This esteemed internship, scheduled for the summer of 2024, is a unique paid opportunity for fifteen undergraduate business and STEM students to experience DOE’s world-class National Lab system, boost their entrepreneurial thinking, and explore energy technology markets.  

“Training in commercialization bridges gaps in the clean energy sector and streamlines the path to bringing innovative clean energy technologies to the public.” said DOE Chief Commercialization Officer and Director of the Office of Technology Transitions Dr. Vanessa Z. Chan. “TCIP is a one-of-a-kind program that contributes to developing a critical workforce, while simultaneously recruiting talent for the DOE to advance commercialization within the United States.” 

Throughout the program, interns focus on the business side of technology commercialization and learn skills such as customer discovery, value propositions development, and market sizing; they will apply these tactics to National Laboratory-developed technologies. Outside of their assigned technology, interns explore and contribute to an array of projects that lie at the intersection of business and technology, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, computing, data science, and biofuels.   

New to this edition of the TCIP, OTT will host an in-person opening event at DOE Headquarters in Washington D.C. to kick off the program and connect interns to DOE experts and leadership. Also new to the program, interns will have the option of either being onsite at their assigned National Lab or working remotely. Students working remotely will still have the opportunity to visit their assigned National Lab.  To wrap up the program at the end of the summer, all interns will reconvene in-person to present their work to National Lab and OTT technology commercialization experts. 

DOE encourages the participation of underserved communities and underrepresented groups. Program details are dependent on funding allocation.
